AVON -- A large fire destroyed a longtime Avon business on the town’s Main Street Tuesday evening, as firefighters numerous area communities responded to the blaze.

The fire took place at Powers Furniture and Appliance store, which was located at 117 N. Main St. in Avon. The fire was reported at about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Bon Homme County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff Mark Maggs, the building will be a complete loss, but he said no other nearby businesses are threatened at this point.  

Fire departments from seven communities have worked the scene, including Yankton, Wagner, Springfield, Tyndall, Tripp, Dante and Avon. Firefighters had worked the scene of the fire for more than two hours to control the fire from spreading and to protect nearby businesses and homes.

A cause has not been determined at this time, and authorities expect more information to be known on Wednesday.
