A semi-truck and trailer hauling corn caught fire Wednesday morning on Interstate 90, which closed the eastbound exit to Mitchell at mile marker 330 for a half-hour.
Ronald Riggs, 54, of Ethan, was cited for not having an annual inspection on the trailer, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. Officials with Mitchell Fire Department were on scene for nearly an hour. Battalion Chief Steve Nedved said the fire originated from the breaks on the trailer.
The 2009 Freightliner Conventional Classic 120 was driving on Interstate 90 when the driver noticed the trailer on fire and pulled off on the exit. After fire crews extinguished the flames, the South Dakota Department of Transportation put salt down on the exit because of the freezing water.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol, Mitchell Police Division, Davison County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell Fire Department and South Dakota Department of Transportation responded.
There were no injuries.
