A vehicle that caught fire Friday evening was quickly extinguished with snow and a fire extinguisher.

Mitchell Dispatch received a call at 7 p.m. that a vehicle was on fire in the TMA parking lot on Main Street. The 1999 Ford Ranger sustained heavy damage to the fuse box, odometer area and dashboard, said Patrol Sgt. Joel Reinesch of the Mitchell Police Division.

The vehicle had been parked for 45 minutes before someone called the owner to tell him the headlights were on. When the owner arrived, the vehicle was on fire. He attempted to put the fire out with snow, Reinesch said, but was not entirely successful.

When a Mitchell police officer arrived, he used his in-vehicle fire extinguisher to put out the fire, Reinesch said.

No citations were issued because the vehicle was legally parked, he added.
