Feterl leads Fighting Cougars past Marion

MARION -- Brandon Feterl had 22 points, six steals, four rebounds and four assists for the McCook Central/Montrose boys' basketball team Monday as the Fighting Cougars beat Marion, 57-44.

MARION -- Brandon Feterl had 22 points, six steals, four rebounds and four assists for the McCook Central/Montrose boys' basketball team Monday as the Fighting Cougars beat Marion, 57-44.

Jay Huls added 12 points for McCook/Montrose and Brian Duxbury had four rebounds. The Fighting Cougars shot 45 percent from the floor, hit 10-of-17 free throws and had 17 rebounds.

Marion got 26 points and 14 rebounds from Broderick Schmidt in the losing effort. Phil Luke had eight points and six rebounds, Braden Schmidt had four assists and Shayne Becker had three steals. Marion shot 36 percent from the floor and hit 8-of-13 free throws. Marion had 38 rebounds.

McCook/Montrose won the JV game 51-16. McCook Montrose is 5-0 and will play Chester next. Marion is 0-3 and will play tonight in Marion against Bridgewater/Emery.

Lyman 74, Colome 49

COLOME -- Lyman outscored Colome 22-6 in a decisive third quarter as the Raiders beat the Cowboys, 74-49, in a high school basketball game in Colome.

Zane Abrahamson scored 19 points to lead Lyman, which evened its record at 3-3. Shae McClanahan added 15 points for the Raiders, and Reed Reuman had 12. Lyman won the rebounding battle, 27-17, and forced 20 Colome turnovers.

Colome, which trailed by only eight points at halftime, was led by Ethan Vobr, who had 12 points and five rebounds. Cole Shippy and Leighton Baker added 10 points each as the Cowboys fell to 1-4.

Lyman, which won the JV game, will return to action Friday at White River. Colome will play at Corsica on Thursday.

Hanson 68, Dakota Christian 48

CORSICA -- Tyson Gau and Jamin Bridge combined for 41 points in Hanson's 68-48 victory over Dakota Christian in a boys' high school basketball game in Corsica Monday night.

Gau had a game-high 21, while Bridge had 20. Hanson lost the JV game 37-35, shot 50 percent from the field and was outrebounded 33-19 by Dakota Christian.

The Cadets were 18-of-46 from the field and had 27 turnovers in the game. Michael Zomer had a team-high 14 points, Mitch Vander Pol had 10 points and Lee Niewenhius had six rebounds and five assists.

Hanson is still undefeated at 6-0 and plays at Mount Vernon on Jan. 16, while Dakota Christian is 3-3 and plays South Central Thursday at Burke.

GREGORY -- Gregory pulled away to a 10-point lead after the third quarter to grab its second win of the season Monday night against Stanley County. The Gorillas won, 65-51.

Sid Eagle Star had a game-high 22 points, Alex Chocholousek had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Nate Schmitz added 15 points for the Gorillas.

Gregory was 22-of-45 from the field, 17-of-23 from the free-throw line and won the rebounding battle, 37-20.

For Stanley County (1-4), Austin Iverson had 16 points.

Gregory is now 2-1 and plays at Winner on Saturday.

HIGHMORE -- Highmore-Harrold beat Sanborn Central 64-38 Monday night in Highmore.

Tyler Wieseler led H-H with 14 points. Dana Keller and Cole Hamlin each scored 10 points. Highmore-Harrold was 29-for-46 from the field and 7-for-12 from the line.

Nate Effling was the only player in double digits for the Rebels with 13. Sanborn Central was 14-for-39 from the field and 7-for-12 from the line.

The Rebels, who won the JV game 38-34, play Mount Vernon Friday in Mount Vernon.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS -- Candra Soderman and Shelby Meyer each scored 18 points to lead Iroquois in its 69-57 win over Wessington Springs Monday.

Soderman added nine rebounds for Iroquois, which was 23-for-55 from the field.

Mindy Kraft led the Spartans with 17 points and Megan Sedlacek had 13 rebounds. Wessington Springs was 26-for-62 from the field.

Iroquois is now 4-3 and the Spartans fall to 0-9.

Scotland 53, Ethan 36

SCOTLAND -- Scotland defeated Ethan 53-36 Monday night in Scotland.

Molly Kokesh scored 14 points and April Winne added 12 for Scotland. Kokesh also had eight rebounds for the Highlanders, who were 19-for-40 from the field and 6-for-10 from the line.

Shelby Andersen led the Rustlers with 14 points. Johanne Scheich had eight rebounds. Ethan made just 19 percent of its field goal attempts and was 4-for-9 from the field.

CANISTOTA -- Plankinton's Ellen Bucher led all scorers with 21 points as the Pirates beat Canistota, 63-43.

Tanya Olsen added 17 points and Devena Holmes chipped in with 10 for Plankinton. Olsen added seven rebounds. Plankinton was 6-for-11 from the free-throw line and had 32 rebounds.

Haley Herman paced the Hawks with 15 points and Victoria Albers added 10. Albers also had nine rebounds. Canistota shot 44 percent from the field, was 5-for-16 from the line and had 32 rebounds.

Canistota is now 0-4 and hosts Centerville Friday.

Freeman 78, Gayville-Volin 23

FREEMAN - Hillary Paulson had 19 points and five rebounds and Dayna Peterson had 15 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and five steals in Freeman's 78-23 win over Gayville-Volin in a high school girls' basketball game in Freeman.

The Flyers shot 56 percent from the field and led 26-0 after one quarter and 43-6 at halftime. Freeman also got 11 points from Hillary Stern and 10 from Allie Wynia. Freeman had 29 rebounds and 11 turnovers.

Gayville-Volin was led by seven points from Taylor Anderson. The Bears shot only 23 percent from the field.

Freeman improved to 4-1 and will play Bridgewater/Emery in Emery next. Gayville-Volin is 0-6.

HURLEY - Jasmine Hansen had 15 points and Haley Jorgensen had 11 rebounds and seven steals for Hurley, but it wasn't enough to prevent a 46-36 loss to Hurley.

Melanie Kathol led Irene/Wakonda with eight rebounds. No other stats were reported.

Hurley is now 2-3 and will host Scotland tonight. Irene/Wakonda will host Bon Homme tonight in Wakonkda.

Irene/Wakonda won the JV game 25-15.

MOUNT VERNON -- The Parkston girls' basketball team improved to 7-0 with a 46-29 victory over Stickney/Mount Vernon Monday night in Mount Vernon.

The Trojans' Marie Malloy had a game-high 16 points, and teammate Emma Murtha had 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Parkston was 18-of-51 from the field and hauled in 28 boards.

For Mount Vernon, Sarah Vermeulen had 10 points and six rebounds. The Fillies shot 25 percent from the field and are now 4-2 on the season. They travel to Hanson on Thursday, while Parkston plays Friday against Vermillion.
