Extension official says SD pasture rent rising

BROOKINGS (AP) -- A South Dakota State University Extension specialist says rental rates for range and pasture land are rising in South Dakota due to increased demand for corn.

BROOKINGS (AP) -- A South Dakota State University Extension specialist says rental rates for range and pasture land are rising in South Dakota due to increased demand for corn.

Extension beef specialist Ken Olson says increasing demand for corn for ethanol production and export has increased the price of corn, and that has increased the cost of virtually all other livestock feed. He says those influences have been an important factor in driving up land prices and rental rates.

Olson says annual range and pasture rental rates this year have ranged from $11.65 an acre in southwest South Dakota to $61.95 an acre in east-central South Dakota.

He says rental rates for range and pasture land have increase more than 10 percent from last year.
