A new veterans memorial in Ethan will serve as a “thank you” to past veterans and a tribute to future members of the military.

The memorial will be built on the edge of Ethan on the south side of Highway 42. Construction on the project is planned to start within a week, said Vilas Kurtenbach, commander of the Ethan American Legion. It is expected to cost up to $40,000.

To create this structure, the American Legion in Ethan is getting a helping hand from Tristen Scott, a sophomore at Ethan High School. Scott voluntarily created a design for the memorial.

Kurtenbach said the Legion had seen other monuments, but "none were like this."

“He just kind of took off and went,” said Dave Hohn, Ethan resident and member of the Ethan American Legion. “We saw the idea he had and liked it.”

The Legion talked about creating a memorial for the last several years, but never found a favorable design until seeing Scott’s.

Hohn felt Ethan needed to honor veterans by having something dedicated to them.

The memorial, according to Hohn, will offer a sense of “fulfillment” and “satisfaction” to veterans and the families of veterans in the Ethan community. .

Kurtenbach said the Legion plans to start the project even though it doesn’t have all of the funding. He explained the project won’t get constructed if it doesn’t get started.

The Legion is in the process of fundraising through raffle tickets and applying for grants, and it plans to dedicate the memorial at a later date, which has not yet been decided, Kurtenbach said.

“The sooner we get it done, the more veterans can see it,” Kurtenbach said. He emphasized that the memorial is for past, present and future veterans.

For Kurtenbach, adding this memorial is a “great plus” because it shows that Ethan is concerned about its veterans.

While there’s no definitive date for completion of the project, it coincides with the upcoming Memorial Day holiday on May 30. For Memorial Day services, Ethan will be having a service at 10 a.m. at Legion Hall. Larry Klumb, a Legion member, will be the guest speaker for the event. A ceremonial roll call reading will follow at the Ethan Cemetery. There will be a potluck at Legion Hall to conclude the services.
