FULTON, Mo. -- The Dakota Wesleyan University women's golf team started the spring portion of its 2008-09 schedule with a second-place finish Tuesday at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, Mo.
The Tiger women put together a two-day total of 680 and finished only behind the host school, William Woods University.
"We averaged 340 for this tournament, and to only be five shots off our average in the first tournament is pretty good," DWU coach Adam Anderson said. "I was happy with how they played."
The men finished in sixth place after shooting a 319 Monday in round one and a 311 Tuesday. The men's field, however, was filled with ranked opponents like Missouri Valley, Grand View and Iowa Wesleyan.
"Every time we go out we want to win, but I think sometimes it's a little unrealistic," Anderson said. "I think last spring the guys actually only won one spring tournament before we won the conference tournament, so it seems like it takes a little while to get going."

Freshman Danielle Bellet led the women individually with a fourth-place finish. She carded an 81 both days and was named to the all-tournament team.
"She's playing really well," Anderson said. "To shoot 81 both days is actually very good. She's been working hard over the winter and changed some things with her game and I think it's paying off."
Kelli Baseley shot an 84 Tuesday to go with her first-round 85, Heather Love shot an 82, Carly Hays improved from a 96 Monday to an 87 Tuesday and Kelly Daniels shot a 94.
Senior captain Brett Abbotts finished in a tie for eighth place to lead the men. He shot a 75 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 152. Sophomore Adam Schiffermiller was playing as an individual and finished in 11th place. He shot a 76 Tuesday for a two-day total of 153.
Tyler Evenson shot a 78 Tuesday, Nick Gates finished with a 79 for the second straight day, Andrew Farrand shot an 82 Tuesday and Chris Pritchard improved on his first-round 88 with a 79 Tuesday.
"We shot a 632 last week in Springfield and this week a 630, so we improved from the first tournament," Anderson said. "More importantly, we improved from (Monday) to (Tuesday). That 311 (Tuesday) was the best round that we've played out of all four in some tough, windy conditions."
The DWU women play Saturday at Great Plains Athletic Conference opponent Concordia University in Seward, Neb., before their first GPAC qualifier April 13.
The Tiger men, however, play their first GPAC qualifier Monday at Hastings College in Hastings, Neb.

"I hope we're able to find a way to get outside and practice," Anderson said. "We're going to probably have to either travel east or south to go play, but we'll make it work."
