LAKE ANDES-A national business chain is putting roots down in Lake Andes, and will provide job opportunities for six to 10 people in the area.

Construction for a Dollar General began recently and, based on the current construction timeline, doors are expected to open with a grand opening ceremony in late summer, around mid-August, according to Crystal Ghassemi, a public relations representative for Dollar General. She said the timeline could change, based on the continuing progress of construction.

The store will be located at 239 S. Park Ave.

When choosing store locations, Ghassemi said, the company looks for places it can offer customers an "easy and convenient" shopping experience, noting the company's stores generally serve customers within a three- to five-mile radius. She said demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns are also taken into consideration.

"We are excited about our upcoming store," Ghassemi said.

The store will offer national and private brands of food, seasonal items, apparel, health and beauty products and more, with approximately 25 percent of their selection priced at $1 or less.

Moreover, Dollar General could provide more opportunities for the community than just shopping.
Ghassemi said the company is "deeply involved" in the communities it serves, through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which awards approximately $12 million annually to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store. The funds are intended to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs. Since its inception in 1993, the foundation has awarded more than $100 million in grants, helping nearly six million individuals pursue literacy education, which includes learning to read and speak English or get their GED.
