Darrell A. Tegels, 66, Spencer, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at his home.

A memorial gathering will be at 5 p.m. today at St. John Neuman Center, Spencer. There will be no burial as his body will be donated to science at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Kinzley Funeral Home, Salem.

He was born Nov. 14, 1942, near Mitchell, to Clarence and Matilda (Bornhorst) Tegels.

He grew up in Mitchell and attended school there. During his school years he spent his summers in Spencer. His work as an engineer and mechanic took him many different places during his life, but about a year ago he settled back in Spencer.

He was a member of Pro Pheasants, Ducks Unlimited, NRA and the North American Hunting Club. He was also a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife Eileen, Spencer; his mother; 15 children; 25 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother; and five sisters.

He was preceded in death by his father; a son; and a grandson.
