Change is inevitable.

Each day, The Daily Republic journals the changes in our communities.

For years, we’ve worked hard to act as the recorder of history in southeastern South Dakota. We plan to continue those efforts, but the best way we can do that is with some changes of our own.

Beginning Sept. 17, Monday editions of The Daily Republic will be delivered to our subscribers through our electronic edition. Print editions will continue to be delivered to subscribers Tuesday through Saturday.

This decision has been made to ensure our own stability and future. Rapid increases in newsprint prices, driven by recent and substantial tariffs, have caused as much as a 30-percent increase in material costs. This increase has driven similar changes in publication cycles across the newspaper industry, including the New Orleans Times-Picayune dropping to three days a week and in Minnesota, the Post Bulletin in Rochester adopting a five-day schedule. Add that to the closing of retail stores in our area and general decline in print advertising nationwide, and you will see why we need to make moves that reduce costs that will allow us to continue to produce a quality product.

Our commitment to deliver the news to you each day remains as strong as ever, just a change in format of how you receive your news. Up-to-the minute news will always be available on The Daily Republic’s website, mitchellrepublic.com, with a new and improved site that will be debuting later this year.

We believe these changes in publishing and delivery will offer the best opportunity to serve our customers’ needs. We know there’s a niche for a strong source for local news in our region, and that’s what we are dedicated to do.  

Since 1879, our newspaper - like any business - has evolved to take advantage of new opportunities in our changing world. The internet has allowed us to better serve our customers with new and innovative ways to get the news out. Stories can break virtually every day and we publish to our website in real time, with our content viewed by people not just in our backyard, but around the world. The newspaper must evolve with the new world like many other media companies, and we are making changes that will allow us to provide our readers with the best local information at a monthly cost that remains affordable.

Subscribers may be wondering how this will impact delivery rates. We don’t plan to reduce rates because of this change. The last subscription rate increase was in 2013. We will still provide news and information six days a week - the Monday edition being digital. All subscribers have access to the e-edition, which includes up to 10 pages of expanded national news and sports content seven days a week.  

Most importantly, we remain your newspaper, and we invite you to contact us with any feedback or suggestions on what you’d like to see in print and online. We thank you for your continued readership over the years and into the future.
