Two individuals have been arrested for second-degree murder charges related to a Saturday night shooting in downtown Mitchell.
Authorities said Jose Morales Acevedo, 27, and Luis Perez-Melendez, 28, were arrested Sunday for second-degree murder, according to the Mitchell Department of Public Safety. A 38-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. He has not yet been identified, pending family notification.
Police said Sunday the shooting was not believed to be a random act, and investigators said that the suspects knew the victim. The man killed in the shooting was found in the hallway of a building in the 500 block of North Main Street shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Mitchell Police Department at 995-8400, or submit an anonymous tip to Mitchell Area Crime Stoppers at 996-1700.
"It's still an active investigation, and we're stressing that anyone with information contact police," Mitchell Police Chief Mike Koster said Sunday.
Second-degree murder in South Dakota is defined as any act imminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard to human life, although without any premeditated design to effect the death of any particular person.
