CHAMBERLAIN — A Lower Brule man originally charged with hitting a woman with a bull whip in December will not serve additional jail time, a Brule County court ruled May 12.

Shane Coleman, 31, pleaded guilty to one count of simple assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor, and was sentenced to 180 days in jail with 172 days suspended and credit for eight days served.

Coleman was arrested on Jan. 15 for the incident, which took place between Dec. 20 and Dec. 31, according to the indictment filed against him two days before his arrest.

He was originally charged with aggravated assault, with three counts filed in the alternative to one another accusing him of assaulting the woman with a dangerous weapon, with extreme indifference to the value of her life and in a way that caused serious bodily injury.

Coleman was ordered to pay $562.63 in fines and court costs.
