LAKE ANDES — A Lake Andes man was sentenced May 12 to spend a year in jail for beating a woman last year.

Bishop Caple, 26, pleaded guilty in April to one count of simple assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor, and was sentenced to 360 days in jail with credit for one day served.

Shortly after 3 a.m. on May 30, 2019, authorities in Charles Mix County were notified that a woman in Pickstown needed an ambulance. According to court documents, law enforcement arrived to find a door kicked in and a woman having trouble breathing. The woman reportedly said Caple had beaten her repeatedly and had pushed a girl into a wall when she tried to intervene.

The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Wagner for treatment and was later transferred to a Yankton hospital for a collapsed lung and two broken ribs, according to an affidavit.

Caple was charged with aggravated assault, a Class 3 felony, and child abuse, a Class 4 felony. When sentenced, he was ordered to pay $611.50 in fines and court costs.
