AGENCY VILLAGE, S.D. — A far northeast South Dakota man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the drowning of a baby in December.

Felix Duane Johnson, 27, of Agency Village in Roberts County was babysitting his girlfriend's 11-month-old child when the baby died unattended in the bathtub on Dec. 17 in their home.

Johnson said he kept "getting feelings like he should go and check on the child, but he ignored the promptings and became distracted with his mobile phone," said court documents.

The child then drowned in the bathtub. The mother was at work at the time.

Johnson admitted in a court appearance this month in federal court that the death of the child was his responsibility and that it was the result of his "gross neglect and lack of due caution and circumspection."

The case was investigated by the FBI.

Johnson faces up to 8 years in prison. He was immediately taken into custody.
