A federal court sentenced a Lower Brule man to two years in prison last week for strangling a woman last February.

Boyer LaForge Jr., 31, will be on supervised release for three years following his prison sentence for assault of a spouse by strangulation, and he was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment.

The assault occurred on Feb. 4, when LaForge and the woman were drinking and LaForge accused her of stealing from him, eventually grabbing her by the throat.

LaForge was indicted in April on charges of aggravated sexual abuse, assault of a spouse by strangulation and child abuse. The indictment accused LaForge of forcing a woman to engage in a sexual act and putting her in fear of being injured or kidnapped. All offenses were alleged to have been committed on the same date and involved either the woman or a child, whose age was not specified.

LaForge pleaded guilty to the offense on Sept. 23.
