PIERRE -- A man was sentenced on Sept. 9 to time served for assaulting a man in November on Crow Creek tribal land.

Jacey Estes, who spent more than five months in custody between his arrest and sentencing, was ordered to spend one year on supervised release and pay a special assessment of $25. He is prohibited from having any contact with the victim.

Estes pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge on July 22 for assaulting the man on Nov. 3. The original felony indictment filed against Estes in March alleged that Estes had caused serious injury to the man with his feet.

A warrant for Estes' arrest was issued March 13, and he was arrested on March 21. He was released the following day on a personal recognizance bond.

On June 10, another arrest warrant was issued for Estes, alleging that he had violated the conditions of his pretrial release. He was arrested on June 19. While his case was pending, Estes was granted two furloughs of less than a day each to attend a family member's funeral and a medical appointment.
