Mitchell man charged with manslaughter
A Mitchell man was charged Tuesday with manslaughter following the death of a man whom he was arrested for assaulting last week.
Dylan Thompson, 26, was originally arrested on Thursday following a fight at Thirsty’s Bar in Mitchell. The 59-year-old man also reportedly involved in the fight was hospitalized for his injuries, including severe head injuries reportedly sustained after Thompson caused the man to fall to the ground and hit his head. Authorities said the 59-year-old died Tuesday.
Thompson was first charged with aggravated assault, a Class 3 felony, but was charged Tuesday with first-degree manslaughter, a Class C felony punishable by up to life in prison and a $50,000 fine.
According to the Mitchell Department of Public Safety, Thompson was arrested without incident at the Davison County Public Safety Center, and investigation is ongoing.
Manslaughter, unlike murder, is a charge given in connection with deaths where the person being charged did not have the intention of causing a death. The person most recently charged with manslaughter in Davison County prior to Thompson is Anthony Lewis, also of Mitchell, who is scheduled to be sentenced for the August 2017 death of Quinn Schleuning next Monday.
