Man who shot toward fishermen in northeast SD faces assault charge
ABERDEEN, S.D. — A Sisseton man accused of firing a round from a rifle toward two men in a boat on Red Iron Lake now faces a second felony aggravated assault charge.
Gerald Vrchota, 62, is also charged with reckless discharge of a gun, according to court documents. The charges stem from an incident around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at South Red Iron Lake in far northeastern South Dakota, according to the paperwork.
The documents accuse Vrchota of firing a shot into the water next to the boat Pat Rubendall and Justin Heidinger were in.
The second charge was tacked on since there were two people — two victims.
Rubendall previously said that he and Heidinger, both of Sioux Falls, were fishing near Vrchota’s boat dock during a bass fishing tournament when he fired the rifle.
Vrchota was arrested and released on a $5,000 bond, according to court documents. His next court date is Oct. 23 at the Marshall County Courthouse in Britton.
