WESSINGTON SPRINGS—A man was arrested Saturday for reportedly choking, punching and kicking a 29-week pregnant woman.

Dominic Schmidt, 31, of Mitchell, is charged with aggravated domestic assault, a Class 3 felony punishable by 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.

While in the emergency room, the victim said she and Schmidt went to a friend's house the previous night, and Schmidt was drinking. When they returned left, she said she and Schmidt began to argue.

When the victim attempted to leave the house, Schmidt allegedly followed her, hit and kicked her more than 15 times and obstructed her breathing. The victim also said Schmidt got in a vehicle and positioned it in a way that looked as if he were going to try to hit her with it.

Eventually, the victim said she managed to get to a neighbor's house, where the police were called.

The victim, who was told that she had a concussion, stated that Schmidt has assaulted her twice before, but that this is the first time she has reported it to police.
