RAPID CITY (AP) - Crews are burning an overgrowth of trees in the Skyline Wilderness Park area of Rapid City to reduce the potential for wildfires.

The Rapid City Journal reports city officials said Thursday workers are moving to an area further southwest to continue the park management task. Fire Lt. Tim Weaver says nearby resident may notice light smoke and hikers should take caution along the nearby trails.

Crews are using a controlled burning device called a Burn Boss to reduce overgrowth that could fuel fires. The tool produces a high-velocity swirl of air to burn a series of slash piles in the bark. The Burn Boss produces temperatures hot enough to make the process nearly smoke-free.
