Council to consider 2nd and Lawler Co.'s outdoor eating feature
For the summer season, Jeremy Gunkel, owner of 2nd and Lawler Co., is seeking to build another outdoor eating deck along the sidewalk of East Second Avenue.
The Mitchell City Council will consider approving a downtown property owner’s request on Monday to construct an outdoor eating area on the corner of Second Avenue and Lawler Street.
For the summer season, Jeremy Gunkel, owner of 2nd and Lawler Co., is seeking to build another outdoor eating deck along the sidewalk of East Second Avenue. The council will take action on the request during the 6 p.m. meeting on Monday at City Hall.
According to Public Works Director Kyle Croce’s memo to the council, the 8-by-24-outdoor eating area would be constructed with wood decking material in front of the 201 E. Second Ave. downtown toy shop and eating establishment. Croce noted the deck area will not impede the stormwater drainage and pedestrian access to the sidewalk.
In addition, the outdoor eating area will have a slope in compliance with American Disabilities Act (ADA), Croce wrote in the memo. If approved by the council, the outdoor feature will be up from May 4 to Oct. 15, 2021.
Considering the bump out deck feature will be near the corner of East Second Avenue and Lawler Street, the city is requiring Gunkel to place reflective tape on the deck for vehicles to clearly see it in the evening hours.
Gunkel’s request to add the outdoor feature last year had some residents concerned it would cause a crash. However, according to Croce, there were no crashes directly caused by the deck throughout the five months it was up.
