Boys' basketball: Strong first half propels Ethan to win over Plankinton

PLANKINTON -- Ethan built a 12-point lead and never looked back Tuesday, beating Plankinton 67-45 in Plankinton.

Josh Endres led Ethan with 20 points in the contest, while Tanner Duba added 15 and Cory Wegehaupt had 14. Duba also had seven rebounds, and Endres, Drew Fergen and Wegehaupt all had six rebounds.

Ethan shot 49 percent from the field (27-of-55) and 62 percent from the free throw line. Plankinton was led by 12 points from Travis Olsen, while Michael Mayclin added nine points, five assists and three steals. Chase Kristensen had eight points and 14 rebounds for the Pirates, and Bert Bucher also had 14 rebounds.

Plankinton made 22-of-52 shots from the field and was 5-of-10 from the free throw line.

Ethan is now 2-0 to open the season, while Plankinton is 0-1.

Scotland 61, Viborg 60

SCOTLAND -- Skyler Bloch made sure that Scotland coach Tom Schlimgen got his 400th career varsity basketball victory on Tuesday night.

Bloch led the Highlanders to a 61-60 win over Viborg with 36 points and 11 rebounds.

Carl Evenson added eight assists and four steals and Chandler Edwards pulled down eight rebounds for Scotland in the win.The Highlanders shot 24-for-46 from the field and 9-for-17 from the line.

Cory Jacobsen put up 25 points for Viborg in a losing effort. Viborg shot 23-of-52 from the field and 9-of-13 on free throws.

Scotland had 25 rebounds and just 10 turnovers to Viborg's 14 boards and 15 turnovers.

The Highlanders start their season 1-0 and travel to Tyndall on Friday. Viborg falls to 0-1.

Scotland won the JV game, 34-26.

White Lake 66, Woonsocket 61

WOONSOCKET -- Tyson Peters and Shane Thiry each scored 18 points Tuesday to lead White Lake to a 66-61 win at Woonsocket.

Jordan Hanten added 13 points for the Wolverines, and Caleb Kirsch had 11. White Lake hit 25-of-60 shots from the floor, but struggled at the free throw line, hitting only 11-of-29 attempts. The Wolverines turned the ball over only seven times, while forcing 14 from Woonsocket.

Woonsocket got 19 points from Todd McWhorter and 16 from Alex Warkenthien. The Redmen made 23-of-46 shots overall, but hit just 6-of-16 free throws in the loss.

White Lake is now 1-1 on the year, and Woonoscket is 0-2. Woonsocket won the JV game 30-29.

Avon 59, Corsica 32

CORSICA -- Matt Dykstra posted 23 points to lead Avon past Corsica 59-32 in its season opener.

The Pirates grabbed a 26-12 halftime lead after allowing the Comets just four points in the second quarter. Earv Archambeau also hit double digits with 11 points for Avon. Dykstra grabbed 10 rebounds and Adam Oster had six assists. Riley Schrank scored 13 points and snagged nine rebounds and Tony Plooster added 10 for Corsica.

The Pirates shot 62 percent from the line and 64 percent from the field while holding the Comets to just 38 percent from the line and 34 percent from the field. Avon also controlled the boards, 30-19.

The Pirates are 1-0 and host Parkston on Tuesday. Corsica fell to 0-2 and hosts Plankinton Friday.

Avon's JV team also won. The score was not available.

Parkston 52, Tripp-Delmont/Armour 44

PARKSTON -- Parkston started its season with a 52-44 victory over Tripp-Delmont/Armour.

The Nighthawks scored 22 points in the second quarter to jump to a 31-26 lead at the half, but Parkston responded with 20 points of its own in the third quarter to pull away. David Maxwell scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Trojans. Craig Holbeck scored 11 points and Pete Nelson had 10 more for the Nighthawks. John Schneider had 11 rebounds. TDA controlled the boards 35-30, but had 15 turnovers to Parkston's five.

The Nighthawks will play Saturday at Bridgewater/Emery and the Trojans play Friday at Chamberlain.

Freeman Academy 72, Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 52

FREEMAN -- Freeman Academy outscored Oldham-Ramona-Rutland 41-20 in the second and third quarters on its way to a 72-52 win.

Ethen Wentz scored 15 points to lead the Bobcats. Ethan Schmeichel added 13 points, Drew Waltner had 11 and Jordan Ortmann scored 10. Schmeichel, Waltner and Jarrod Preheim each grabbed eight boards for Freeman Academy. Alex Waba led all scorers with 20 points for ORR and Kurt Clark added 10. Waba also had nine rebounds.

ORR went 15-for-24 from the line and had 31 rebounds and 22 turnovers. The Bobcats were 22-of-36 from the lines, 24-of-56 from the floor and had 39 rebounds and 18 turnovers.

ORR is now 1-1. Freeman Academy is also 1-1 and will play Thursday at Hurley. ORR's JV team also won.
