Area wrestlers lead SDSU to three wins

Three former area wrestlers dominated over the weekend for South Dakota State, helping the Jackrabbits go 3-0 at the Franklin and Marshall quadrangular in Lancaster, Pa., pushing SDSU's winning streak in duals to five matches.

Senior Weston Blasius, a Kimball native, freshman Zach Blindert, Salem, and sophomore Adam Everson, Mitchell, combined to go 8-0 for the Jackrabbits as they beat Franklin and Marshall, 31-13, American International, 36-11, and Sacred Heart, 35-12.

Blasius and Everson both went 3-0 on the day for South Dakota State. In the win over Frankin and Marshall, Blasius scored a 10-2 decision over Matthew Gittleman at 157 pounds and Everson won a 7-1 decision over Albert Gianforti at 149 pounds. In the win over American International, Blasius had a 6-0 win over Vladimir Bershenko, and at 141 pounds, Everson pinned Gonzalo Carazo in 2:40. Finally, in the win over Sacred Heart, Everson won a 13-6 decision over Chris Davis at 141 pounds and Blasius won a 7-2 decision over Austin Alpaugh.

Blindert, the all-time wins leader in South Dakota high school history, went 2-0 on the day. At 184 pounds, he won a 10-1 major decision against Franklin and Marshall's James Shulz, and against Sacred Heart, he pinned Brandon Lapp in 6:49.

n University of Sioux Falls freshman wrestler Doug Thompson finished fifth in the 125-pound division Saturday at the Hastings Open. The Kimball native beat Joey Stephens of Pratt Community College by forfeit in the fifth place match.

Thompson was pinned in 5:43 by Hastings' Nathan Stepp in the first round, but came back to win his first wrestleback match by virtue of an 11-4 decision, then beat teammate Chris Strand by forfeit. He followed with a 10-9 win before being pinned in his nex match in 4:46, moving him to the fifth place match.

n South Dakota State junior swimmer Katie Budahl continued her strong season Saturday and Sunday as the Jackrabbits won a pair of meets and St. Louis University in St. Louis.

In SDSU's win Saturday, Budahl, a Mitchell native, won the 100-yard breaststroke for the third time this season in a time of 1:07.83. SDSU won again on Sunday, 111-94, as Budahl won the 200-yard breaststroke by more than 11 seconds with a time of 2:25.84. Budahl also was part of the Jackrabbits' victorious 400-yard medley relay team.
