WOONSOCKET A Woonsocket man received serious non-life-threatening injuries in a vehicle versus train crash in Woonsocket Sunday evening.

MIchael Kilcoin, 69, was traveling eastbound in a 2005 Chrysler van in Woonsocket and did not yield at a railroad crossing located at West Ninth Street and South Dumont Avenue. The van collided with a BNSF train that was traveling southbound, according to a press release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

South Dakota Highway 34 and three residential streets were closed to traffic for about two hours and traffic was rerouted.

The crash occurred at about 5:35 p.m. Sunday.

Kilcoin was transported to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. He was not wearing a seat belt. He was the only occupant of the vehicle and charges are pending, officials say.

The crash remains under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
