BURKE — One person died and another was seriously injured Friday evening in a two-vehicle crash near Burke.

At 7:23 p.m., a 1996 Chrysler Eagle Vision was eastbound on S.D. Highway 18, 3 miles east of Burke, when it crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a westbound pickup, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The 16-year-old male driver of the Chrysler, who was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 29-year-old male driver of the 2012 Dodge Ram 2500 sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Burke hospital, then airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The two drivers were the only two people reported to be involved in the crash. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
