SIOUX FALLS -- One person died Saturday following a water rescue of kayakers at Covell Lake in Sioux Falls.
The Sioux Falls Police Department said they received a water rescue call at 8:14 p.m. Saturday about two kayakers capsizing on the lake and were struggling to make it to shore.
One kayaker was rescued and brought to shore, but the other kayaker could not be located. Rescue crews searched the lake -- which is in the north-central part of the city -- until about midnight when emergency responders recovered the victim’s deceased body. Police confirmed the death on Sunday morning.
The rescued victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The names of the victims have not been released. Sioux Falls Fire and Rescue, the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks and Sioux Falls Emergency Management was involved with the search efforts.
