A two-vehicle crash late Thursday night caused a semi to spill about 50 gallons of fuel, according to authorities.

The crash is under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and charges are pending against 38-year-old Jody Larson, of Aberdeen.

He was the driver the of 2016 Mack Semi, which was transporting fuel on Highway 38 near Nu Star Energy, on the western edge of Hanson County. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety said the semi was pulling a fuel tanker of gasoline and had just left the Nu Star complex. The driver pulled out onto the highway making a wide right-hand turn.

Authorities say Larson did not see an eastbound car, and the wide turn caused the semi to enter the oncoming lane of traffic. That’s when the car struck the semi on its side, rupturing the fuel tank.

The collision resulted in the car rolling down into the ditch. A 37-year-old female sustained serious non-life threatening injuries. She was driving a 2015 Chevy Traverse in the oncoming lane and was transported to Mitchell’s Avera Queen of Peace. She was wearing a seat belt.

Alexandria and Mitchell fire departments handled the fuel cleanup.
