One dead after semi-trailer rollover near Bonesteel

BONESTEEL — One man is dead following a semi-truck and trailer rollover in rural Gregory County Friday afternoon.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says a 36-year-old male passenger died, while a 32-year-old male driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred at 1:52 p.m. Friday, 25 miles east of Bonesteel on U.S. Highway

Authorities said a 2014 Volvo semi-truck and trailer was driving northbound on U.S. Highway 281 and entered a curve when the driver lost control, causing the semi-truck and trailer to roll into the west ditch.

The 36-year-old male passenger was not wearing a seatbelt, as he was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene. The 32-year-old male driver was wearing a seatbelt and was taken by ambulance to the Wagner Community Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to officials.

Names of those involved in the crash have not been released. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash, and charges are pending against the driver.
