An Alexandria man was arrested last week following a two-vehicle crash north of Mitchell.
Donavan Heidinger, 34, was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence after he rear-ended another vehicle at 11:14 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of North Foster and 251st Street, according to the Davison County Sheriff's Office.
According to officials, a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling south on Foster when it slowed to prepare for a turn. Heidinger, driving a 2002 Mini Cooper, crashed into the back of the PT Cruiser, in which two 7-month-old infants sustained minor injuries.
Heidinger was given a preliminary breath test at the scene, which indicated he had a blood alcohol content level of 0.18 percent. Officials say he was driving 60 mph in a 40 mph zone. A blood draw was also taken at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell, but the results were not yet available.
Mitchell Ambulance and Mitchell police assisted at the scene of the crash. Both vehicles received about $5,000 in damage.
Reckless driving is a class 1 misdemeanor in South Dakota. If convicted, the penalty is up to a year in jail and a maximum of $2,000 in fines.
