MADISON -- Authorities have released the names of those involved in a two-vehicle crash Saturday near Madison that left one person dead and another injured.
Tavian Shaw, 18, of Sioux Falls, was pronounced dead after being transported to the Madison hospital. Tyler Milliron, also of Sioux Falls, the 19-year-old driver of the 2011 Honda Accord in which Shaw was a passenger, sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
The crash reportedly occurred at 12:19 p.m., 1 mile east of Madison. The Honda was eastbound on S.D. Highway 34 when it rear-ended a 2002 Peterbilt semi truck and trailer, in which driver Jay Reurink and passenger Melanie Burggraff, both 59 and of Dell Rapids, were uninjured. The truck had just turned left onto Highway 34.
Shaw and Milliron were both transported to the hospital following the crash. Shaw was not wearing a seat belt, and whether Milliron was is under investigation.
Both Reurink and Burggraff were wearing seat belts.
Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
