MADISON – One man died Saturday in a two-vehicle crash between a car and semi-truck that occurred east of Madison.
The crash occurred at 12:19 p.m. on Saturday, 1 mile east of Madison on State Highway 34. According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said a 2011 Honda Accord was eastbound on South Dakota Highway 34 when it rear-ended a 2002 Peterbilt semi-truck and trailer which had just turned eastbound onto Highway 34.
Both occupants of the Honda Accord were taken to the Madison hospital. The 18-year-old male passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, was later pronounced dead. The 19-year-old male driver, whose use of a seat belt remains under investigation, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries.
The two occupants of the semi-truck, the male driver and female passenger, were wearing seatbelts and were not injured. Both are 59 years old. The names of those involved are not yet being released pending notification of family members.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
