South Dakota Sen. John Thune, a Republican, spoke on the Senate floor Thursday about his father, Harold, who will turn 100 years old on Dec. 28.

Harold was a World War II fighter pilot. He is also considered one of South Dakota's all-time great prep basketball players who went on to play for the University of Minnesota Gophers from 1939 to 1941. He was the team's most valuable player in 1940.

Born in Mitchell, Harold Thune moved to Murdo when he was 11, during the heart of the Great Depression.
