Every semester the Mitchell Middle School Student Council looks for a way to give back to the Mitchell community.

This semester, the student council challenged the school's 23 math classes to a money drive for the Mitchell Area Big Friend Little Friend organization. The top three classes received a pizza party, cookies, and mini candy bars, respectively. Mitchell Middle School math teacher and Student Council Advisor Cassey Ver Hey said the fundraiser was "the biggest this year" with $1,240 raised, surpassing the council's goal of $500.

The money was raised over a two-week time frame with the top sellers being Robin Winter's second-block class with $195.63, Winter's first-block class with $180.24, and Ver Hey's fourth-block class with $140.

In addition to the recent money drive, Ver Hey said the council and MMS students have volunteered their time and money to other local organizations.

"This year we helped the Salvation Army, through food donations or a change donation to be able to wear a hat in school that day. We also have students serve at (First United Methodist Church) Love Feast and help with the Special Olympics State Basketball tournament," Ver Hey said.

The MMS Student Council members voted to donate the proceeds from the money drive to the Mitchell Area Big Friend Little Friend organization because many of the students are directly impacted by the service. The 16-member MMS Student Council includes students Lara Widstrom, Dawson Schroeder, Bella Schroeder, Jean Haley, Ireland Blindauer, Keenah Escobin, Gabe Schneider, Sutton Thompson, Maya Tupper, Eli Schroeder, Claire Hegg, Harley Handrahan, Breanne Reidl, Max Tupper, Jared Roth and Trayton Moore.

The Mitchell Area Big Friend Little Friend organization supports mentoring programs that help create one-to-one relationships with community members of all ages. Community-based mentoring, school-based mentoring, and mentor mom programs are available for members of the community, and free monthly match activities for Bigs and Littles are offered, as well.
