The cause of a fire that left a machine shed south of Mitchell a complete loss on Jan. 10 remains undetermined after authorities completed their investigation.

Mitchell Fire Marshal Shannon Sandoval went to inspect 25656 Highway 37, the former site of Upper Midwest Garage Door, after the scene had been secured overnight. Also there initially for the secondary investigation were representatives from the state fire marshal's office and DCI, who brought a K-9 unit. The building owner's insurance company also sent arson investigators to the scene.

Sandoval told The Daily Republic on Tuesday that the fire was discovered to have originated in the office area in the building's southwest corner, but that the cause was still under investigation.

Sandoval added Thursday afternoon that while he suspects the cause was electrical and charred pieces of many electronic items such as laptops were found inside the building, there were so many unrecovered elements of those items that there was not enough left to conclusively determine the fire's origin.

Sandoval said the incident has been turned over to the owner's insurance company.
