Freeman man killed in Monday crash near Marion

MARION — A Freeman man has been identified as the victim of a Monday morning fatal crash north of Freeman.

At 10:33 a.m. Monday, 56-year-old Ronald Heiter was driving a 2012 International ProStar semi-truck and trailer on 447th Avenue, five miles north of Marion, when he failed to negotiate a left-hand curve, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. The truck and trailer tipped over and rolled before starting on fire.

Heiter was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unknown whether he was wearing a seat belt.

South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating, and other responding agencies included Marion Ambulance, Marion and Parker Fire Department and Turner County Sheriff's Office.
