Guthrie was sentenced in 2000 to life in prison without parole for a murder conviction. He was convicted by a jury in the May 1999 death of his wife of 30 years, Sharon Guthrie.

She drowned in a bathtub at the couple's home after an overdose of sleeping pills. Her husband was accused of putting the prescription pills in her chocolate milk.
