15-year-old girl injured in rollover crash Saturday near Mitchell

A 15-year-old girl was seriously injured following a one-vehicle rollover near Lake Mitchell Saturday morning.

The crash occurred at 9:02 a.m. at the intersection of 407th Avenue and 249th Street, located about 1 mile north of Mitchell.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred when a 2001 Mercury Sable, driven by Abigail Starr, of Mitchell, was traveling south on 407th Avenue when she lost control of the vehicle and went into the ditch, striking a utility pole at the intersection with 249th Street. The vehicle then rolled and came to rest on its roof and the driver had to be extricated from vehicle.

Starr was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She was transported via ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.

Authorities said charges are pending in the incident. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
