SIOUX FALLS (AP) - A 12-year-old cellist has been sharing the stage with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra during its annual holiday concerts.

Maximus Gurath will complete his third and final performance with the orchestra Sunday in Sioux Falls. The Argus Leader reports that he will play a cello piece by Boccherini, the one that led him to first place and a $500 prize in the Young Musician Concerto Competition last March.

Maestro Delta David Gier says it's a privilege for him and the orchestra to play a role "in the shaping of young musicians" like Gurath.

The middle school student began playing the cello when he was 4 years old. He practices 80 minutes a day, and his goal on Sundays is to finish practicing before football games begin.
