What better place to get in the holiday spirit than Underneath the Tree?

Friend de Coup, Mitchell High School's show choir, will make that possible with its first public performance of the year, this week during Underneath the Tree with FDC.

MHS Vocal Director Chris Miller said the annual Christmas show is once again a salute to Christmas pop songs. The title of the show comes from one of the songs that will be performed, "Underneath the Tree," by pop star Kelly Clarkson.

"I kind of built a show around that number," Miller said. "It came together after that."

Miller said this year's high school show choir boasts 29 girls and 23 boys as singer/dancers, 17 in the pit and six on the technical crew.

Friend de Coup will perform its annual Christmas show at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the MHS auditorium. Tickets are $10, and are available from 3 to 7 p.m. at the MHS south door ticket booth. To reserve tickets, call 995-3045. Miller said people can leave a message to reserve tickets if no one answers. Tickets will also be available at the door on performance nights.

Proceeds from ticket sales go to the Mitchell Music Boosters, and will be used to help the show choir cover travel and operating expenses. Miller said it's the best and easiest kind of fundraiser for the group to do.

"If we can 'sing for our supper' rather than go out and sell cookies and candy bars and candles, they're going to get a good show, and they'll know that their money went to a good cause," he said.

The night's performances will include solos, duets and small group numbers celebrating the sounds of the season. In addition to Friend de Coup's holiday harmonizing, Miller said Mitchell Middle School's show choirs, Maximum Velocity and Exclamation, will join in the performances. Maximum Velocity will perform Thursday and Saturday, and Exclamation will perform Friday.

The holiday show also gives this year's show choir its first chance at a public performance before digging into its competition set.

"It gets us in front of an audience for the first time as a group, so we can really get ourselves figured out," Miller said.

Plus, the audience loves a Christmas show.

"I've got a lot of great feedback on this show from the community," he said. "They really like us doing a Christmas-themed show."
