ACT awards ceremony celebrates 26th year

Mitchell Area Community Theatre celebrated its 26th year of entertaining audiences Thursday during the awards ceremony held at the Pepsi-Cola Theatre for the Performing Arts in Mitchell.

Mitchell Area Community Theatre celebrated its 26th year of entertaining audiences Thursday during the awards ceremony held at the Pepsi-Cola Theatre for the Performing Arts in Mitchell.

This year's season of productions in the running for awards included "Beauty and the Beast;" "The Mousetrap;" "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus;" "Barefoot in the Park;" "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee."

Award winners included:

• Best Scenic Design, props and set: Devin Carey and Aaryona Nedved-The Mousetrap

• Best Light Design: (tie) Devin Carey-Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus; and The 25th Annual Putnam County spelling bee.

• Best Sound Production: Andy Menning-The Mousetrap.

• Outstanding youth actor: (tie) Elissa Delehant and Kayleigh Royston-Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

• Best Female Vocals: Aaryona Nedved-Beauty and the Beast

• Best Costumes: (tie) Ruth Sejnoha-Beauty and the Beast and Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus; Vicky Hanson-Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

• Best Choreography: Devin Bassart --The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

• Best male vocals: (tie) Kevin Carroll-Beauty and the Beast; Devin Bassart-The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

• Best Actress in a Drama/Comedy: Kate Ahlers-Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

• Best Supporting Actress in a Drama/Comedy: Laretta McPeek-Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

• Best Actress in Musical: Aaryona Nedved-Beauty and the Beast

• Best Supporting Actress in a musical: (tie) Ashley Reck-Beauty and The Beast; Ashley Evelyn Schroeder-The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

• Best Actor in Drama/Comedy: Eric Van Meter-The Mousetrap

• Best Supporting Actor in drama/comedy: (tie) Benton Schmidt-The Mousetrap; Devin Carey-Barefoot in the Park.

• Best Actor in a musical: Kevin Carroll-Beauty and the Beast.

• Best Supporting Actor in a musical: (tie) Gary Thury-Beauty and the Beast; Devin Bassart-The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

• People's choice: Beauty and the Beast.

• Special awards: Lavern Hedblom.

Sam Fosness joined the Mitchell Republic in May 2018. He was raised in Mitchell, S.D., and graduated from Mitchell High School. He continued his education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he graduated in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a minor in English. During his time in college, Fosness worked as a news and sports reporter for The Volante newspaper.
