A Mitchell man was arrested May 8 for allegedly chasing a woman with a hammer during an argument.

Christopher Carpenter, 41, is charged with one county of aggravated assault, a Class 3 felony.

At 11:19 p.m. on May 7, Mitchell police were called to a West Sixth Avenue residence for a report of an argument. According to court documents, a woman said she and Carpenter had gotten into a verbal argument and that Carpenter had picked up a hammer and held it to her shoulder.

Carpenter then allegedly chased the woman with the hammer, swinging it twice and making two holes in a wall. Carpenter reportedly said he had grabbed the hammer out of frustration but denied chasing the woman or trying to assault her. He was arrested at the scene.
