Erik Kaufman

Erik Kaufman joined the Mitchell Republic in July of 2019 as an education and features reporter. He grew up in Freeman, S.D., graduating from Freeman High School. He graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1999 with a major in English and a minor in computer science.

Kaufman began his journalism career out of college at the Mitchell Republic, where he worked as a court and cops reporter as well as an education reporter from 1999 to 2000. He worked as a special project coordinator and contributing writer and photographer at the Freeman (S.D.) Courier before being named editor of the Hutchinson (County) Herald in Menno, S.D. He worked in that post from 2002 to 2019, when he returned to the Mitchell Republic to write features as well as cover education issues in the community.
