SIOUX FALLS — Two area schools received superior honors at the South Dakota High School Activities Association one-act play festival at Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School, which concluded Saturday.

Chamberlain’s performance of “The Little Prince,” directed by Trisha Burke and Lynn Herder, was rated superior in Class A, as was Bridgewater-Emery’s performance of “13 Signs You Should Stop Being a Pirate,” directed by Valarie Marsh, in Class B.

A number of superior performers were also awarded. Mitchell had three performers ranked superior in Class AA in their performance of “The Complete History of America (Abridged)!” including Wyatt Haibeck, Isaac Heide and Rylie Eitemiller.

Class A superior performers included Hayes Miller, Breckin Steilen, Scoti Donovan, Maxwell Kelsey, Mariah Koenig, and Jack Swanson in Chamberlain’s “The Little Prince.” For Winner’s showing of “The Struggles,” Megan Brozik and Aryn Meiners were awarded superior honors.

Both Chamberlain and Winner had superior ensembles awarded, as well. Chamberlain’s ensemble included Darynn Burke, Chynna Story, Derrick Rasmusson, Aries Fox, Rozalyn Larson and Sailor Lippert, while Winner’s group included Faith Covey, Teresa Taylor, Justin Hausmann, Maggie DeMers, Jack Ducheneaux, Leah Wiechelman and Shelby Scott.

Class B superior performers included Armour’s Emma Bertram, Grady Harrington, Faith Werkmeister, Dylan VanDerWerff and Braden Hawley for their performance of “That's Not How I Remember It.” For Bridgewater-Emery, Katrina Weber, Bailey Haiar and Lindsey Weeldreyer were awarded for “13 Signs You Should Stop Being a Pirate,” and Gabe Miller, Beatrice Nelson and Josie Epp were honored for Freeman Academy’s “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.”

A total of 46 schools performed at the three-day event, and three-person judging panels determined the top productions. Class A schools performed plays that were serious in nature, while Class B schools performed plays that were humorous in nature, and Class AA schools could perform either humorous or serious plays.

The complete list of schools to receive overall superior play honors included:

  • Class AA: Aberdeen Central, Brandon Valley, Douglas, Harrisburg, Pierre, Rapid City Central, Sioux Falls O’Gorman, Spearfish, Watertown and Yankton.

  • Class A: Aberdeen Roncalli, Beresford, Chamberlain, Custer, Elk Point-Jefferson, Flandreau, Madison and Sioux Falls Christian.

  • Class B: Bridgewater-Emery, Castlewood, Chester Area, James Valley Christian, Kadoka Area, Rosholt and Sunshine Bible Academy.
