If you’re wondering where to take the family after eating turkey this Thanksgiving, “The Nutcracker,” can get you in the holiday spirit.

Mitchell Area Community Theatre is set to perform the show at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Pepsi Cola Theatre in Mitchell. Tickets will be available for $15 for “gold seating” and $17 for “burgundy seating.” The show will run again Dec. 6-8.

The cast and stage crew of more than 35 includes a variety of ages, making the show fun and exciting to put on.

“The most fun part has been getting to work with Devin,” said Kadee Vermeulen, who plays the lead role of Clara. “The cast, too, we get to spend so much time with each other, and we just get to know each other so well. We help each other out on stage and we get to make great connections with each other.”

Vermeulen is a senior at Mitchell High School. She has spent time directing children’s plays and performing in shows. Acting has been a favorite pastime of hers and she has enjoyed her time spent at the Mitchell Area Community Theatre where she originally met Devin Carey, the play’s director.

“Kadee and I just recently did a show together and she played a young person in that show,” Carey said, “So it made sense to cast her as Clara in this one.”

Carey has spent 16 years working closely with professional dance and dancing himself in the Twin Cities. He wanted to use his experience in the performance.

“As a scripted show, we have the advantage of using dance to tell the story but we also have the luxury of telling the story in the dialog,” Carey said.

The show has a unique twist in which traditionally, “The Nutcracker” is performed simply as a ballet but now it will include both dance and speaking.

Carey graduated from the University of South Dakota with a major in vocal music performance and a minor in dance theater. He has produced and choreographed over 30 productions with the Mitchell Area Community Theatre since 2006 and spent time in professionally dancing.

The performance will tell the classic Christmas story of Clara and The Nutcracker and will be an opportunity for family to spend time with each other, celebrating the holiday season.
