Allyson Strong, a junior at Mitchell Christian High School, will participate in the 66th Annual All-State Chorus and Orchestra this weekend in Rapid City.
Strong, who plays the flute, was one of four students selected to play the flute in the event. She will play the third chair position. The orchestra includes 156 students from 22 schools and is selected through competitive auditions each fall at three sites around the state, selecting the best musicians in South Dakota, with rehearsals scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
The All-State Grand Concert will be held at 8 p.m. Central time Saturday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City. Dr. Anthony Elliott, a professor of cello at the University of Michigan and the conductor of the Michigan Youth Symphony, will serve as the guest conductor.
Two other area students will play in the All-State Orchestra, both from Freeman Academy. Angel Hernandez will play in the horn section, while Phillip Balzer will play first oboe.
