Fresh off a national runner-up finish, Mitchell show choir Friend de Coup will be hosting its annual event Saturday.

While FDC will perform at 9:55 p.m. as an exhibition at the Mitchell Show Choir Classic, 16 other groups will be competing at the Mitchell School District Performing Arts Center for awards. Mitchell's two middle school groups, Exclamation, and Maximum Velocity, start the day at 8:45 and 9:10 a.m. Show choirs from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota will be in attendance.

The daytime awards will be announced at 6:15 p.m., and the finals run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Final awards are announced at 10:20 p.m.

"This is an exciting end-of-the-year event for us," said Jen Randall, FDC director.

FDC is still enjoying its successful trip competing at the Heart of America Kansas City event. The group took first runner-up against teams from all over the country. Mitchell was also named to have best choreography. Johnston High School, of Iowa, took first.

"Second place at a national event is a very big deal," Randall said, "and to take a caption award was also very cool."

FDC's annual Dinner Theatre performances are also coming up, running March 26, 28 and 29 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Each night, the show is from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at the Corn Palace. There also is a 5 p.m. March 30 performance.

Also of note in recent Mitchell show choir competition, Maximum Velocity received "Best of Show," which was first place out of 10 groups, at Sioux Falls Washington's competition on March 8. At the same event, Exclamation, an all girls group, received "Best Showmanship."
