The Daily Republic's Matt Gade was honored this week by winning Sports Photographer of the Year in the 76th annual Pictures of the Year International competition.
This is the second time in three years Gade has won the award after he won it in 2017 as well. Pictures of the Year says it's the "oldest and most prestigious photojournalism program and competition in the world." Each year, POY recognizes photojournalism excellence along with multimedia and visual editing. Gade's photography of sporting events from Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell High School, regional and rodeo events was matched up against work from all over the country.
Gade has worked at The Daily Republic since September 2014. He has also been honored by the South Dakota Newspaper Association and The Associated Press for his work.
"This is another outstanding honor for The Daily Republic's newsroom, and more specifically for Matt," said Managing Editor Luke Hagen. "He has a great eye for sports photography and his passion shows with what he captures through the lens. Everyone at The Daily Republic is proud he was honored with this deserved award."
