Ethan family honored by Special Olympics South Dakota
Jason, Jolyn, Tyler and Carly Van Roekel, of Ethan, was honored recently by the Special Olympics South Dakota with the "Outstanding Family Award."
Each year, Special Olympics South Dakota recognizes individuals and groups who contribute time, talents and resources in support of the organization. This year's award winners were given on Nov. 3 in Aberdeen.
The Van Roekel family earned the "Outstanding Family Award" for demonstrating unique and outstanding support of Special Olympics South Dakota.
According to a press release from the Special Olympics South Dakota, "Jason Van Roekel was the president of the Parkston Area team for many years. He still plays an important part for the team by heading up the polar plunge. Jolyn is the current HOD and an amazing one at that. She is organized, devoted and makes sure all coaches and athletes know the rules and are in compliance with all requirements.
"Tyler is Carly's big brother. As a high school student he never missed a practice or event. With college and work Tyler is a busy man, but he comes around whenever possible. He's even turned his friends into Carly supporters and Special Olympics champions.
"And they do it because of Carly. Carly is fun, unselfish, dependable and polite. She is growing up to be independent, social and very talented. Carly not only has the support of her immediate family, but she is very fortunate to have a large, supportive extended family."
