The Mitchell Salvation Army and a number of other community organizations are hosting a community food distribution event on Tuesday, April 28 at Cadwell Park.

Members of the Mitchell community and surrounding area will have the opportunity to receive food boxes while supplies last, with 600 total food boxes available. Cars will be directed in and out of Cadwell Park through two lines by Davison County Search and Rescue and Mitchell Public Safety.

Social distancing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be enforced, and all volunteers will be required to wear gloves and masks. To prevent volunteers from reaching into cars and to limit contact, drivers are asked to have their trunks open and space available for the food box ahead of time.

Alternative plans are being set in place for people who do not have a trunk or rear tailgate, which will include an alternate table set up at a distance with food boxes. The guest would then be required to load their own food box into their car.

The following agencies are partnering to coordinate the event: Dakota Wesleyan University, Feeding South Dakota, the Mitchell Salvation Army, the Mitchell Food Pantry, Davison County Search and Rescue, the Mitchell Ministerial Association and the Mitchell Department of Public Safety.

“It’s important during this time for people to know that they are in a community that cares for them,” said Bill Middendorp, Auxiliary Captain with the Mitchell Salvation Army.

The event is geared toward individuals and families who might be encountering a shortage of food items and other resources.
