One of Mitchell's traditional lid-lifting events for summer won't be taking place in 2020, as organizers have canceled Memorial Weekend in Mitchell.

The event was canceled due to concerns about COVID-19. The event was initially postponed on April 1, with a goal of rescheduling.

Held annually on the south end of Main Street, Memorial Weekend was slated to include a poker run, beer garden, car show, bean bag tournament, kids tractor pull, inflatables and a BBQ tasting and competition on May 23. The event also honors military veterans in attendance, as well. A South Dakota Mud Racers event was also on the schedule for May 24.

In lieu of the gathering, organizers said they are looking at how to hold a social-distancing friendly car and motorcycle show and a virtual bean bag tournament, with more information to be announced at a later date.

This year's event was slated to be the first to benefit Big Friend Little Friend, which organizes mentoring programs and services for children in Mitchell. For the first 18 years of the event, Mitchell's Imagine Guild raised money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which included raising more than $250,000 for research toward a cure.
